At Bruce Walters Kia, our service department is sometimes contacted by customers with questions about battery life. It's an important concern, as you don't want to be stranded somewhere in Pikeville, KY without being able to get your car going. In general, batteries over five years old should be replaced, as they could die out at any point.

To test the life of your battery, you'll need a voltmeter. This comes in both analog and digital forms, with the digital type being easier to read. Remember to use gloves and eye protection while you're performing the test in case you come in contact with any acid.

First, turn off the ignition and all vehicle lights. Connect the red/positive test lead to the positive terminal on the battery and repeat with the black/negative test lead and the negative terminal. If the reading shows at least 12.4 voltage, your battery is good to go.
